Kickstarter turned out to be a really interesting experience, especially since I’d never done a Kickstarter project before. Crowdsourcing an idea is great and all, but do people really support stuff?
Yep. Not only did supporters and subscribers take us more than two times over our goal, they floored me because they’re all so nice.
For those of you who don’t know me, I shun “nice.” I avoid the Hallmark Channel. I don’t like greeting cards that rhyme…bleh. Even as a little girl I didn’t go for the warm and fuzzy stuff. A friend and I decided to go see a move last year and she had heard that the movie was “really good” and “nice.” I looked at her with deep suspicion and asked, “It isn’t heart-warming, is it?”
I can’t stand “nice.”
But this Fiction River Kickstarter project has left me re-evaluating my anti-nice stance. Why? Because every one of the authors, editors and supporters I chatted with, messaged and exchanged emails with is— well—really nice.
I’m talking about truly pleasant, helpful and supportive people who genuinely cared about the success of Fiction River and worked to make it grow. Advice, reward package items, laughs, ideas, support. Now I really do feel like part of the Fiction River family. Not only do I enjoy reading it, I feel a connection to so many of the people who make it possible.
I’ve always associated “nice” with shallowness and affected cutesiness. Nice conversation, nice clothes, nice house, nice kids; the accouterments of normalcy.
But this river runs deep. The people who make Fiction River happen have a passion for good fiction and excellence. That left a deep impression on me. And, while I won’t go and buy a greeting card with a poem on it any time soon, I do intend to enjoy the new friendships that this Kickstarter project created. Thank you for that unexpected and truly nice gift.
As for Fiction River, the Kickstarter project worked its magic: so many more people have climbed on board and I’m SOOOOOO excited about the stories to come! One of the cool perks of working here is that I get a preview of what’s in the works.
Pulse Pounders, Risk Takers, Valor, Recycled Pulp, just to name a few of the volumes already in production. One of them has a previously unpublished story by Frank Herbert. How cool is that?!
If you haven’t read the latest volume of Fiction River (Fantastic Detectives) don’t miss it. There’s not a “nice” detective in the bunch.
So, let me know your favorite! What’s your favorite Fiction River story? What’s your favorite volume of Fiction River? Who’s your favorite editor? Favorite author? Which is your favorite Fiction River cover? Let me know one (or more!) of those! There may even be a free ebook in it for you if I share your favorite(s).
And now, grab your heavily buttered popcorn and enjoy our last Fiction River Subscription Drive Kickstarter video! Thanks again for supporting this incredibly deep and diverse anthology magazine.
Read deep and often!
